The Weather Has Finally Changed - So Did the Time! Contest to Win Lesson for Teaching Children About Weather!
Living in Florida makes you so appreciate even the slightest hint of cooler temperatures, and we finally have a ‘fall’ weekend leaving all of us in really great moods. Everyone’s step seems to be a bit happier and lighter. No longer do we feel the oppressive humidity nor do we have to run from one air conditioned car to an air conditioned store to an air conditioned have of a home … instead we are enjoying open houses with cross breezes and the pleasant sounds of the outdoors!
In honor of this lovely weather I would love to share some Weather Fun - some singing and dancing about sunny days, cloudy days, windy days, and rainy days. Look for our suggested classroom activities to go hand in hand with this Boca Beth bilingual song directly following the lyrics!
“The Weather Song”
(sung to the tune of “Eeensy Weensy Spider”)
It’s a sunny day
Es un día soleado
I see the sun
Veo el sol
The sun is yellow
El sol es Amarillo
The sun is bright
El sol es brillante.
It’s a cloudy day
Es un día nublado
There are many clouds
Hay muchas nubes.
Look at the clouds!
Mira las nubes.
The clouds make it shady
Las nubes dan sombra.
It’s a rainy day
Es un día lluvioso
I see the rain.
Veo la lluvia.
We feel the rain
Sentimos la lluvia.
It feels good
Se siente bien.
It’s a windy day
Es un día ventoso
The wind blows fast.
El viento sopla rápido
Look at the leaves
Mira las hojas
I like the wind
Me gusta el viento.

Great visual aids for weather presented in Spanish and English for young children can be found in many places - Carson Dellosa & Lakeshore Learning to name two of them. Use the pictures and the words in both languages for this song laminated together with the English always in the same spot and Spanish in the exact opposing spot. For example, I always place the English word on the left side of every visual aide I present to children while showing the Spanish word on the right side of the picture. Children thrive on familiarity and predicatble routines - this placement is important to their acquisition of the beginning reading of the new language.
Choose one child to hold the picture of sunny, one to hold cloudy, one to hold rainy and one to hold windy. Invite the other children to point a bulletin board area that depicts that weather situation being sung about. If that is not available have the children cut out magazine pictures or internet pictures printed showing sunny, cloudy, rainy and windy. Each child could have their own weather picture on a popsicle stick or simply mounted on construction paper or laminated for participation in this song.
